Traveling with a credit card has enormous benefits. Perhaps most importantly, credit cards are typically safer to carry and use than cash. If your wallet gets stolen, you can contact your bank to lock your credit card, but any cash you were carrying is likely gone forever.
- If your credit card is used fraudulently, you generally won’t be responsible for paying back those purchases.
- But credit cards aren’t for everyone, especially if you struggle to pay your bills on time.
- Even if you are in a better place with money now but have a poor credit history (or are credit invisible ), you might struggle to get approved for a no-annual-fee credit card.
In that case, traveling without a credit card might be inevitable. And the reality is, many Americans don’t have a credit card. More than 175 million Americans hold at least one credit card, according to the 2021 Consumer Credit Card Market Report from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
Cash. PayPal. Gift cards. Debit cards.
Yet every once in a while, traveling without a credit card can still feel impossible, particularly at hotels. So, do you need a credit card for a hotel? Not always — but often. Let’s dig in.
How to do hotel reservation without credit card?
You can book a hotel room without a credit card by using a debit card in most cases. Many hotel chains will also accept prepaid cards, though they are more likely to do so at check-in or check-out than at the time of booking. Typically, you cannot make a hotel reservation with cash, a personal check or a money order.
Can I book on booking without credit card?
p Hotelorangeleaf 5 years ago I India also we are facing the same problem,People book two three hotel without credit card details and at last moment they decide, p pibomarco 5 years ago This is happening worldwide. Your policies are not strict enough. Ron French 5 years ago what would you say the best policy for small chambre dhotes.b and b.is? p pibomarco 5 years ago Depends of your local competition, what you offer, location, season, amount of guests you are having. This year I’ve set a very strict policy that there is no free cancelation after booking. If canceled after 30 days before arrival 100% of the booking is charged.
(although I wouldn’t. it just a prevention. I try to avoid those shady guests, who just book and meanwhile they search for other accomodations that would suits them best. I’ve done this mostly because of gusts from Israel. They book all my apartments in march for July and August. and canceled 14 days before arrival (that was my free cancelation policy before).
Also if you don’t have activated Payments by Booking.com it is still difficult to take money from late cancelations and no-shows if you dont take the money upfront. Most of the guest will empty their credit card or will report to their card provider that they didn’t authorize the transaction, and will refund them back.
With Payments by Booking.com you don’t have to worry to be paid for late cancelations and no-shows, so you can be quite fleksible regarding the policies in this case. Arobinsong 5 years ago Thanks for the feedback. We also use another booking company and have never had a problem. You suggest letting Booking.com charge the guests’ credit card.
I assume they reimburse you. Can you tell me how that works? We do not take credit cards at our B and B. Can you suggest how we can tighten up our policies? And, finally, have you ever actually spoken to someone from Booking.com? You have been very helpful Thanks. p pibomarco 5 years ago I am using Booking.com almost for 10 years now. At the early years it was very frustrating, because at the time they weren’t so flexible regarding the policies and owner wishes. We had to argue a lot for the things that are now available. I also use different online travel agencies, such as expedia, AirBnB, Hostelworld,. and it is true, there are less cancelations or no-shows, but I don’t receive that many bookings from those portals comparing to booking.com. From Booking I receive more then a half or even 3/4 of all bookings comparing to others.
- Next one is AirBnB.
- Sure I have spoken.
- Mostly in the early years.
- Now I don’t really have to, I don’t have the need.
- If I have any questions I just send them a message via extranet.
- If you don’t take credit cards, and can’t make at least preauthorizations there is no good formula.
- Because as said if you are colecting payments with the guest directly, the guest can just empty its credit card (or even make a booking with unvalid card) and you can’t do nothing about it when the guest cancels or doesn’t show up.
If you don’t accept credit cards, Payments by Booking.com would be the best choice. For some this is not quite acceptable because some hosts wants to avoid paying taxes that is why they preffer payments with cash only etc. I would say there is no win/win situation.
But with Payments by booking.com you don’t have to worry about late cancelations and no shows. I am not sure, but at least activate this feature (if you haven’t yet) that at the time of booking the guest must provide credit card details. If you accept bookings without credit cards then there shoudl be more late cancelations and no-shows.
I once activated bookings without credit cards for last minutte bookings. Never again, because there were instantly some no-shows after that. n Nassine 4 years ago Oufff what a relief to read you explaining about the NO SHOWS. I’m new to this and just when I was excited and happy about my first booking, they didn’t show up. I’m so disappointed and upset after spending a full week making sure that everything is perfect for the guests. p pibomarco 4 years ago If this feature is not available in your area, I would suggest that you get yourself a POS Terminal, and you collect at least a deposit before the guest arrives (based on your policy). For example if you have set a free cancelation policy 14 days before arrival, after that time, collect a deposit.
Or at least make a preauthorizations of the card on the time of booking (1,00€). If it doesn’t go through you can report an invalid card and if the gust doesn’t update card information you are able to cancel their booking in 24 hours. Even beter is to activate Online Payments by booking.com (if you have POS Terminal), you will be also covered for late cancelations and no-shows, you will just have to charge Booking’s virtual card.
In the “fine print” you also have an option: “Payment before arrival via bank transfer is required. The property will contact you after you book to provide instructions.” Don’t be upset, it is part of the business and you have all the tools available to avoid this to happen.
- At least not too frequently.
- I had lots of stress, was angry, even sometimes threathaning the guest (abut suing them if they will not pay the no-show fee, or put them on black list etc lol.).
- And again with all the years of experiance it is not worth it.
- Try to accept it.
- Better to be calm which is also better for your health.
🙂 In the end it is also our “fault” anyway. 🙂 n Nassine 4 years ago Thanks again for explaining it so well and for the moral support, I feel much better now knowing the steps and actions to take. I’m actually using the terminal of SQUARE BANK, I can accept payments when the guest is on site, I’m not sure if I can ask guests for their credit card Infos upfront to charge a 50% deposit, 1 or 2 weeks before their arrival to confirm their Booking. p pibomarco 4 years ago If you have a terminal and you can charge cards on distance (don’t need a card phisically) then you should activate online payments. But your terminal must support this feature or your bank must activate this extra. I had to request this at my bank. n Nassine 4 years ago Thank you, great advises. I’m working on fixing them all. Grahamsplacehonduras 4 years ago We are having a lot of last minute cancellation and there is no way for us as hotel to be protected against this as the the channel does’t has required information fields, where the guest cannot proceed with the reservation if missing information such as email, CC information and so on. p pibomarco 4 years ago Set your policies more strict and activate online payments. Guest information: Extranet -> Property -> Policies -> Guest requirements Tiram209 4 years ago Hi, anyone can help with my scenarios below? I did not set any credit card requirement at my property. The weird thing is, if potential customer try to book today or tomorrow, the booking site still asking for the credit card details. If potential customer choose the day after tomorrow and above, then the site will not ask for the credit card details. Anyone have solution how to fix this issue? My goal, I do not want my potential customer to provide their credit card info on all date. Thanks -Villa Solihin- p pibomarco 4 years ago Maybe you have a restriction for “last minute bookers”? I think it was possible to set in extranet that credit card is not needed for last minute bookings. Although I would not advice you that, you’ll probably get more late cancelations and no-shows.

Can you book on booking and pay later?
How does the Pay Later option on Booking.com work? – With the Pay Later option, you can book a trip and delay the payment by a week prior to your arrival date so you have time to save up funds or clear your credit card. When you book through Booking.com in participating locations and with participating properties, the website handles the payment and sends the money to the hotel using its virtual credit card or bank transfer method. The payment will be processed a day after you check in. To opt for the Pay later service, you need to provide your own credit card details versus Booking.com issuing a virtual credit card. Do hotels accept debit cards?
Why do hotels need a credit card? – A credit card may not be absolutely necessary for your hotel stay. Most hotels accept credit cards and debit cards, and this is a normal requirement for 2 reasons:
To validate the reservation: Hotels want to know that you’ll show up for your reservation. By taking your card information, hotels get that assurance. They can also contact you about changes to your reservation and charge cancellation fees. To charge for potential damages or theft: The card which hotels keep on file is used in case the room has any damage or missing items. Usually that’s found after checkout, so charges could post to the card that was used for the reservation or checking in. Hotels may also require a security deposit to ensure that customers leave the room and hotel property as they found it.

That option was once available but cant seem to find it anywhere on the platform. g Giovanni Cortorreal 11 months ago The way to be able to pay with PayPal or credit card is to call Booking.com 1(470)-363-2501 and ask them to change your Payment Method from Bank Transfer to Adyen. They are not going to give you the Banking Details link on the Finance Tab unless you are in the US or or a few other selected countries.
- But changing your payment type to Adyen at least will allow you some flexibility in paying your invoices.
- Don’t send messages for this, they take forever to respond, if they respond at all but call instead.
- Eep an eye on the Financial Overview link in the Finance tab, it will change from Bank Transfer to Adyen when they make the change.
Hope this helps. Kingston Luxur 11 months ago Thanks Giovanni, Adyen as a payment processing platform would be a good option if its availability wasn’t so restricted to only a few countries. See list of Adyen countries. https://www.rapyd.net/blog/what-are-countries-are-supported-by-adyen/ The Caribbean where we are listed is currently NOT on the Ayden list. g Giovanni Cortorreal 11 months ago Did someone at Booking.com told you this or are saying this based on your research? When they change your Payment Type to Adyen you can select the invoices you would like to pay and click the “PAY ONLINE” button for the PayPal/ Credit Card payment options to show-up. g
Why do hotels check credit cards?
Why do some hotels require credit cards? – While many hotels accept debit cards, gift cards and hotel points as payment, some will still require you to present a credit card at check-in or upon making the reservation, no matter what method you’ll actually use to pay. There are two primary reasons why hotels require your credit card information:
Charging cancelation fees. Most hotels have policies where — if you back out of your reservation past the cancellation window — the hotel will charge you anyway. With a credit card on file, the hotel is able to charge cancellation fees. Covering damage, theft or other incidental charges. Most hotels require a security deposit to ensure you won’t damage the room or walk off with the TV. Many hotels require your credit card on file to keep you on the hook for theft or damage.
During your stay, many hotels also make it easy for you to make purchases without actually handing over payment on the spot — such as when you enjoy a drink from the in-room minibar. Those charges typically are billed to your credit card upon checkout.
What if I don’t pay for a hotel?
ANY charges you owe them will be charged to that card. Can we go to jail for not paying a hotel bill? No, you cannot go to jail for not paying a hotel bill. However, the hotel may take legal action against you in order to recover the money owed.
How do I avoid hotel deposit?
Other Tips That Might Help – Ultimately, any deviation from the hotel’s printed and advertised policy is up to the staff. As with any customer service transaction, being pleasant and respectful goes a long way to help, as does a professional appearance that cries, “I would never accidentally leave a window open so a flock of seagulls could trash your room,” as famously happened to a Canadian man in 2001.
Have a plan B. If you can honestly tell hotel staff that you’ll go somewhere else if they don’t waive the deposit, they might be willing to do so. Just make sure you won’t be incurring hefty cancellation fees if you do go elsewhere. Ask if you can leave a valid credit or debit card number on file in case of damages, but with no hold or a small hold to verify the card’s validity (some hotels will authorize just $1 on your card). Ask if you can make a cash deposit for incidentals or damages, which you’ll receive back when you check out. If the hotel accepts this, have them place the cash in an envelope before you leave the desk, then seal the envelope and let you sign across the seal. Join the hotel’s frequent traveler program. Sometimes, even basic status is enough to waive or reduce incidental deposits. Stay with the same chain or hotel. If they see that you’re a frequent visitor, they’ll be more likely to waive a deposit.

Can you pay for hotel when you book?
Download Article Download Article Planning a complete vacation or a business trip can be done efficiently online. Websites such as Expedia, Hotwire, Orbitz, Travoline and Kayak have replaced traditional travel agents in helping people search for and book the least expensive flights, cars and hotel reservations.
- 1 Compare prices. Search for the hotel you want by checking specific hotel websites, or using an online travel agent, such as Expedia, Travelocity or Orbitz. Look for hotels that have the dates you need available, and figure out how much you will spend per night.
- Research sites such as Hotels.com or Travelweb, which are specific to hotel bookings only, and do not include additional search options for flights and rental cars.
- Check for additional fees. Some independent online booking agencies charge a fee for using their service. The fee can range from $1 to over $10, and it is never refundable if you cancel or change your reservation.
- Want to save a little extra money? Scope out wikiHow’s coupon pages for Hotels.com, Hotwire, Booking.com, Travelocity, Expedia, and/or TripAdvisor before checking out.
- 2 Reserve your hotel. Book the hotel you want by using the hotel’s website, or an online travel site. Provide your contact information and the dates you will arrive and check out. Advertisement
- 3 Determine when you will have to pay for your booking. As you complete your reservation, you will be given an amount that is due.
- Pay in full for the best rates. Many hotel sites and discount agents will offer you a lower price if you pay for the entire stay at the time of your booking. There are often restrictions on canceling or changing your reservation.
- Provide the required deposit. If your plans may change and you do not want to pay for the full cost of your stay, book a hotel that only requires a deposit. When you pay the deposit required by the hotel, which is often the equivalent of one night’s stay, you can usually still change your travel dates without a penalty.
- Pay at the time of your stay. Depending on the hotel, you may be able to guarantee your reservation with a credit card number, but not pay anything until you arrive at the hotel. Most online agents such as Expedia, Orbitz and Hotels.com will not provide this option.
- 4 Determine how you will pay for your booking.
- Pay by credit or debit card. The easiest way to pay for a hotel booking online is by using a credit card. You will need a credit card number to make a reservation online, and you can use that card to pay for the hotel deposit or the full price of your stay.
- Pay with PayPal, if you want to use BookIt.com. PayPal is a popular method of online payment, because you do not need to provide your credit card information to yet another website. BookIt.com is the first online travel agency accepting PayPal as a method of payment. You will need to have a PayPal account already set up.
- Pay with miles or reward points. If you are a frequent traveler, you have probably accumulated enough points at the hotel chain you use to get some nights for free. Book online directly with the hotel, and provide your rewards card number and other information.
- 5 Bid on bookings using online auction sites such as Priceline or Hotwire. When you name the price you are willing to pay, you will be given a list of hotel options. Be aware that on sites such as these, you will not always know which hotel you are getting before you book.
- You will need to pay in full with a credit or debit card at the time of booking.
- 6 Understand the cancellation policy. Some online booking agents such as Priceline and Hotwire do not allow you to change or cancel your reservation at all. Others such as Expedia and Orbitz will charge a fee. If you pay in full, or make a deposit, be sure you read the cancellation policy online. If you are not paying until the time of your stay, find out how far in advance you will need to cancel before your credit card is charged for a night.
